The DGSA rules apply (with certain exemptions) to undertakings involved in the preparation, storage, or transport of dangerous substances. There is a legal requirement for one or more DGSAs to be appointed on a full or a part-time basis.
The DGSA is responsible for checking that the dangerous goods rules and regulations are being adhered to within their company. The CPC24-7 5 day DGSA training course will lead to candidates taking Core, All Classes and Road Freight Mode papers which are set by the SQA
The course is intensive. It covers the ADR requirements relating to such matters as classification, packaging and labeling of dangerous substances in UN Classes 1 to 9, Transport Categories, Limited and Excepted quantities, Documentation, Placarding and Marking of vehicles.
All materials needed for the course are provided. A list of authorized exam material will be provided at the time of booking. This can be purchased along with the course and includes the latest version of ADR.
The pass mark for each paper is 65%. Questions are of an academic style and marks are generally awarded for identifying the precise legal source for any particular answer – it is not enough to know the answer, you must know why it is the answer.
There are no multiple-choice questions.
The detailed areas of study and the question/mark weightings allocated to them are the key issues for candidates preparing for the exams.
Some subjects appear in more than one exam paper; they are considered in varying detail and from different standpoints.
DGSA exam administration
In the UK, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) operates the DGSA exam system on behalf of the Department for Transport (DFT).
Exams are held at independent centres located throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The exams begin at the same time on the same day at each centre. All exam procedures are under the control of SQA staff at each centre.
At present, there are 4 exam dates each year.
